Long before satellite imagery, AI-driven forecasts, and concrete flood barriers, communities across the subcontinent were reading the sky, the soil, and the behaviour of animals to anticipate disasters. That accumulated wisdom, tested and refined over centuries, is what we today call indigenous knowledge. It is not folklore to be romanticised or a museum piece to be preserved behind glass. It is a living, working system of understanding that continues to protect lives, sustain livelihoods, and offer answers to some of the most pressing questions of our time, from climate adaptation to disaster risk reduction.

What is indigenous knowledge?
At its core, indigenous knowledge refers to the understanding, skills, and practices that local communities develop over generations through direct interaction with their natural surroundings. It is generated and transmitted by the natives of a particular community over a long time as they adapt to the socioeconomic and agroecological environment around them. This means it is not acquired through formal schooling or textbooks. Instead, it emerges from lived experience, careful observation, and the patient trial-and-error of communities rooted in a specific place.
The Convention on Biological Diversity describes this body of wisdom as the knowledge, innovations, and practices of indigenous and local communities, developed from experience gained over centuries, adapted to local culture and environment, and transmitted orally from one generation to the next. Different terms are often used interchangeably in academic literature, including traditional knowledge, local knowledge, and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK). Although scholars debate the boundaries between these terms, they all point to the same fundamental idea: wisdom rooted in a community’s long-standing relationship with its environment.
How it differs from scientific knowledge
Modern science is typically universal, standardised, written, and experimental. Indigenous knowledge, on the other hand, is localised, contextual, mostly oral, and experiential. A scientist might test a hypothesis in a controlled laboratory. A farmer in the Sundarbans tests her hypothesis every monsoon, and the feedback she receives from the land and sea shapes the next generation’s decisions. Neither system is superior. In fact, many researchers now argue that traditional knowledge can coexist with technical approaches to disaster risk reduction, and that combining the two produces more resilient outcomes than relying on either alone.
Key characteristics of indigenous knowledge
Scholars who have systematically reviewed the literature on this subject have identified a recurring set of features that define indigenous knowledge systems. Understanding these characteristics helps us appreciate why this form of knowledge is so valuable and yet so vulnerable in today’s world.
Context-specific and locally grounded
Indigenous knowledge is intimately tied to a particular place. A water-harvesting technique perfected in the arid stretches of Rajasthan may not suit the waterlogged plains of Assam. This specificity is a strength, not a limitation. Because the knowledge has evolved alongside the ecosystem, it reflects an intricate understanding of local soil types, rainfall patterns, plant species, and seasonal cycles. A systematic review of indigenous knowledge literature found it to be local, community-owned, intergenerational, holistic, and largely tacit.
Community-based and collectively owned
Unlike patented inventions or copyrighted texts, indigenous knowledge typically belongs to the community rather than to any single individual. Elders, healers, farmers, artisans, and women all serve as custodians of different fragments of this collective wisdom. Healing practices, for instance, are rarely the property of one person. Among the Santhal community of Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Odisha, the Ojhas serve as healers who use herbs, roots, and rituals, but the broader ecological and cultural knowledge that supports their practice is shared across the entire community.
Intergenerational and orally transmitted
This wisdom is passed down through stories, songs, proverbs, rituals, and everyday practice. Oral traditions play an enormous role in passing down environmental management practices, which is why the loss of indigenous languages is often linked to the loss of indigenous knowledge. When a language dies, an entire library of observations about medicinal plants, weather patterns, and sustainable harvests can vanish with it.
Holistic in approach
Indigenous knowledge does not compartmentalise the world. Agriculture is linked to spirituality, health is linked to the environment, and social life is linked to ecological balance. Indigenous peoples often say that their knowledge is holistic and cannot be meaningfully separated from the lands and resources available to them. This is why traditional farming in many parts of the country involves not just planting but also rituals, seasonal festivals, and seed-saving practices that together maintain the balance of the entire system.
Dynamic and adaptive
A common misconception is that indigenous knowledge is static, frozen in some imagined past. In reality, it is remarkably dynamic. Each generation modifies, experiments, and adapts the knowledge to fit changing circumstances, whether those are new weather patterns, new crops, or new social realities. This adaptability is precisely what has allowed such systems to survive for centuries.
Experiential and practical
Indigenous knowledge is built on doing, not theorising. A pastoralist in Gujarat learns to read the clouds not from a meteorology textbook but from decades of watching the sky and comparing notes with fellow herders. This experiential base gives the knowledge a practical immediacy that abstract theory often lacks.
Indigenous knowledge in the Indian context
India offers one of the world’s richest repositories of indigenous knowledge, reflecting the country’s extraordinary ecological and cultural diversity. With tribal communities making up approximately 8.6 percent of the population, the country has access to an enormous aggregate of indigenous knowledge that spans agriculture, healthcare, water management, architecture, and biodiversity conservation.
Consider a few illustrative examples. Tribal communities in southern India use between 1,000 and 1,500 plant species for their everyday needs, compared to the 100 to 150 species that most of the global population depends upon. Ethnobotanical studies among six tribal communities in Andhra Pradesh uncovered nearly ten previously unreported food plant species, underscoring how much scientific research still has to learn from these communities.
In the northeast, the Mising tribe of Assam has developed flood-resilient farming practices and stilt-house architecture that allow them to live with, rather than fight against, the annual floods of the Brahmaputra. In Sikkim, the Lepcha community has developed an elaborate understanding of disasters through folklore, identifying precise indicators for prediction and methods for mitigation, many of which align with principles that modern disaster management has only recently formalised.
Sacred groves and biodiversity conservation
Across Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan, patches of forest known as sacred groves have been protected for centuries through religious and cultural norms. These groves often serve as biodiversity hotspots, sheltering species that have disappeared from surrounding landscapes. The practice demonstrates how spiritual belief and ecological outcomes can reinforce one another.
Traditional water management
From the johads of Rajasthan to the zabo system of Nagaland, Indian communities have engineered ingenious water-harvesting structures calibrated to local topography and rainfall. Many of these systems were abandoned during the twentieth century’s push toward large-scale engineering, but communities and governments are now rediscovering their value as climate change makes rainfall increasingly erratic.
Why indigenous knowledge matters for sustainable development
The relevance of indigenous knowledge today extends far beyond cultural heritage. The United Nations has repeatedly recognised it as vital to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and for good reason.
Climate change adaptation
Indigenous communities have been adapting to environmental change for millennia. Their knowledge complements scientific data with precise landscape information that is critical to evaluating climate change scenarios. Traditional weather indicators, crop rotation systems, and resource management practices offer low-cost, locally appropriate adaptation strategies that high-tech interventions often cannot match.
Disaster risk reduction
Perhaps the most dramatic demonstration of indigenous knowledge’s value came in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, when communities on several islands survived because oral traditions had taught them to run to higher ground when the sea suddenly retreated. For generations, indigenous peoples and local communities have successfully used traditional methods to prepare for and respond to disasters. Integrating such knowledge into early warning systems and disaster preparedness plans can save lives that purely technological systems might miss.
Food security and biodiversity
Traditional agricultural practices such as mixed cropping, intercropping, and the conservation of indigenous seed varieties maintain soil fertility and genetic diversity. In a world increasingly dependent on a handful of commercial crop varieties, these practices act as insurance against the collapse of our food systems.
Healthcare and medicine
India’s Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL), a joint initiative of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and the Ministry of AYUSH, documents thousands of formulations from Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, and Sowa-Rigpa. The TKDL was created specifically to prevent the misappropriation of India’s traditional medicinal knowledge through wrongly granted patents, and it has successfully challenged numerous such patents internationally.
The threats and the way forward
Despite its proven value, indigenous knowledge faces serious threats. Language erosion, migration to cities, displacement from ancestral lands, formal schooling that dismisses traditional wisdom, and climate change itself are all eroding the systems that sustain this knowledge. Indigenous knowledge is not well documented and is in danger of being lost as its custodians pass away, which makes its preservation and integration an urgent priority.
The path forward is not to treat indigenous knowledge as a substitute for modern science, nor to treat modern science as a replacement for indigenous knowledge. Instead, the two should be woven together. Policies must give communities a meaningful role in planning and decision-making, intellectual property frameworks must protect traditional wisdom from biopiracy, and education systems must make space for local knowledge alongside global science. Doing so respects the communities that created this knowledge, and it equips all of us with better tools to face the complex challenges ahead.
