This guide walks you through the four foundational steps that set you up for success: maintaining a research diary, identifying a theme, consulting your academic counsellor, and staying flexible with your topic.

MSO 002, the Research Methodologies and Methods course, is a core paper in IGNOU’s Master of Arts programmes in Sociology and Public Administration. The course builds the conceptual and practical grounding needed to design and conduct social science research. When you move from coursework to your project, you essentially shift from being a consumer of research to being a producer of it.

That shift is significant. Unlike a regular assignment, a research project demands independent thinking, structured planning, and sustained effort over several months. It requires you to analyse a particular situation and arrive at some conclusion through your own fact-finding. This is why rushing straight into data collection, as many students do, is one of the most common and costly mistakes. A solid foundation determines the strength of everything that follows.

Starting a research diary or logbook

The first practical tool every researcher should adopt is a research diary, sometimes called a logbook or research journal. This is not a formality to tick off – it is arguably the single most useful habit you can develop during your project.

A research diary is a working document kept in real time. It records every step of your project: the ideas that cross your mind, the articles you have searched, the conversations with your counsellor, the doubts you want to revisit, and the small decisions that shape your study.
