The story of how we came to study society as a science begins not in a laboratory but in the intellectual ferment of 18th-century Europe. When thinkers began questioning tradition, authority, and religious dogma, they opened the door for an entirely new way of understanding human collective life. What emerged was sociology, a discipline that promised to bring the same rigour applied to planets and chemicals to the messy, complicated world of people living together. This marriage of scientific method with the study of society shaped modernity itself, and its echoes still guide how we analyse everything from caste to climate change today.

The Enlightenment and the birth of a scientific worldview

The Enlightenment was not a single event but a sweeping intellectual movement that dominated European thought through the 17th and 18th centuries. Enlightenment thinkers proposed that human reason, combined with empirical study of the physical world, would lead to progress and the improvement of the human condition. At the heart of this movement were three powerful ideas that would later become the foundational pillars of sociology: rationality, empirical observation, and faith in progress.

Before this period, Europeans typically looked to religious texts and ancient philosophers for answers about society and human nature. The Enlightenment broke this pattern decisively. Philosophers like John Locke, Voltaire, and Montesquieu insisted that the world could be understood through direct observation and critical reasoning. Questions once answered by priests were now to be answered by experiment, measurement, and argument.

Why modernity needed a new science

The 18th and 19th centuries witnessed three massive upheavals that transformed European society: the French Revolution, the Industrial Revolution, and the scientific revolution. Old certainties collapsed. Peasants left villages for factories. Kings lost heads and crowns. These changes produced a new kind of society, one that was urban, industrial, and rapidly shifting, and it needed a new kind of thinker who could make sense of it all.

It was in this context that sociology emerged, grounded in the idea that human societies could be studied scientifically. The early sociologists were not merely academic observers. They were deeply concerned citizens who believed that if society could be understood, it could also be improved.

Science as the template for social analysis

The founders of sociology looked at natural sciences like physics, biology, and chemistry with admiration. These disciplines had produced real knowledge by following a clear method: observe carefully, collect evidence, form general laws, and test them. Why, they asked, could the same not be done for society?

Auguste Comte, the French philosopher who coined the term “sociology” in the 19th century, gave this ambition its sharpest formulation. Comte believed that society evolved through three stages – theological, metaphysical, and positive – with the positive stage characterised by individuals who gather knowledge through observation and affirm it through the scientific method. This approach, known as positivism, insisted that only what could be observed and measured counted as real knowledge about society.

Key scientific principles adopted by sociology

Empirical observation: Social phenomena had to be studied through evidence gathered from the real world, not deduced from abstract principles.

Objectivity: The researcher was expected to set aside personal beliefs and study society with the same detachment a botanist brings to studying plants.

Generalisation: The goal was to identify patterns and laws that held across different societies, much as physical laws hold across different contexts.

Rational inquiry: Rather than accepting traditional explanations, every claim about society had to be tested through reason and evidence.

Emile Durkheim and the science of social facts

If Comte imagined sociology as a science, Emile Durkheim actually built it. Working in France in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Durkheim turned abstract ambitions into a rigorous research programme. He established the first European department of sociology, founded the first sociological journal, and became France’s first professor of sociology.

His great innovation was the concept of the social fact. According to Durkheim, social facts are elements of collective life that exist independently of and are able to exert an influence on the individual. Language, laws, religious beliefs, moral codes – these are not invented by any one person. They exist before we are born, shape our behaviour, and continue after we die.

Treating social facts as things

Durkheim’s most famous methodological instruction was to treat social facts as things. What he meant was that sociologists should study customs, laws, and institutions the way a chemist studies compounds – as objective realities with their own properties, not as ideas to be celebrated or condemned. Durkheim argued that sociology must possess a clearly defined object of study, distinct from philosophy or psychology, and must apply a recognised objective scientific method that avoids prejudice and subjective judgment.

His study of suicide remains the classic demonstration of this approach. By analysing official statistics across European countries and communities, Durkheim showed that suicide rates – which seem like the most personal of decisions – followed predictable social patterns. Rates varied by religion, marital status, and economic conditions. Behind the seemingly individual act lay powerful social forces. This was sociology doing what physics did: finding hidden regularities beneath surface chaos.

Modernity and the problem of solidarity

Durkheim was not a naive cheerleader for modern society. Much of his work focused on the inability of societies to maintain their integrity and coherence in modernity, an era in which traditional social and religious ties are much less universal. He saw that industrialisation had weakened old bonds of community and created what he called anomie – a condition of normlessness where people lose their moral moorings.

Yet Durkheim remained fundamentally committed to modernity’s promise. His critique was not a rejection but an attempt to understand what was going wrong so that it could be fixed. He believed new forms of solidarity, based on mutual interdependence rather than shared tradition, could hold modern society together. This optimism – the faith that science could diagnose social ills and guide their cure – is pure Enlightenment inheritance.

Karl Marx and the scientific critique of capitalism

If Durkheim represents one path from Enlightenment to sociology, Karl Marx represents another. Marx approached society with the same scientific ambition but reached dramatically different conclusions. Where Durkheim sought to understand the conditions for social order, Marx wanted to expose the conditions producing social conflict.

Marx developed what came to be called historical materialism, a theory that explains how forms of society rise and fall as they further and then impede the development of human productive power. In this view, the material conditions of life – how goods are produced, who owns the factories, who controls the land – determine the shape of politics, law, religion, and culture. Ideas do not move history; economic forces do.

Science, not utopia

Marx was emphatic that his socialism was scientific rather than utopian. Scientific socialism, as it came to be known, is a method for understanding and predicting social, economic and material phenomena by examining their historical trends through the use of the scientific method. Earlier socialists had dreamed up ideal societies and tried to convince people to build them. Marx insisted that socialism would arise not from dreams but from the objective contradictions of capitalism itself.

This claim to science had teeth. Marx devoted years to detailed empirical investigation, poring over factory inspection reports, economic statistics, and historical records. His masterwork, Das Kapital, was an analysis of capitalism conducted with the same painstaking care a naturalist might bring to describing a species.

Modernity’s contradictions

Like Durkheim, Marx saw modernity’s flaws clearly. Capitalism produced tremendous wealth but distributed it grossly unequally. It liberated workers from feudal bondage only to subject them to a new form of exploitation. It created the conditions for human flourishing while alienating people from their labour, their fellow humans, and themselves.

Yet Marx was no nostalgic. He celebrated the bourgeoisie’s destruction of feudal relations and saw technological growth and human liberation as progressing hand-in-hand. The problem was not industry or modernity as such. The problem was the capitalist social arrangement that channelled modernity’s productive power into inequality rather than shared prosperity. The solution, for Marx, was to push modernity further – to realise the emancipatory promise that the Enlightenment had proclaimed but that capitalism had betrayed.

Shared faith in reason despite sharp differences

Durkheim and Marx disagreed about almost everything substantive. Durkheim emphasised social integration; Marx emphasised class conflict. Durkheim treated religion as socially functional; Marx saw it as the opium of the people. Durkheim believed modern society could be reformed; Marx believed capitalism had to be overthrown.

Yet beneath these differences lay a remarkable common ground. Both were children of the Enlightenment. Both believed society could be understood scientifically. Both used empirical evidence to generate general theories. Both saw modernity’s flaws but retained faith in its core principles – reason, progress, and human emancipation. And both believed sociology could and should serve the goal of making modern society more humane and equitable.

The sociological imagination as Enlightenment inheritance

This scientific orientation shaped the entire discipline of sociology. Early sociologists like Auguste Comte were heavily influenced by the Enlightenment’s commitment to rationalising human social life, with thinkers like Montesquieu laying early groundwork for comparative studies. The discipline grew as a scientific and reformist field deeply tied to Enlightenment principles of rationality, universality, and progress.

Max Weber later added another dimension, studying how rationalisation – the spread of calculated, efficient organisation – was itself the defining feature of modern life. Bureaucracy, science, and capitalism were all expressions of this rational spirit that the Enlightenment had unleashed.

Limits and lasting influence

The scientific model of sociology has faced serious challenges. Interpretivists argue that human behaviour cannot be studied like chemical reactions because meaning and intention matter. Postmodernists question the very idea of objective truth. Feminist and postcolonial scholars have shown how supposedly neutral science often reflected the biases of European men.

These critiques have reshaped sociology but have not displaced its Enlightenment foundations. Even critics of positivism usually argue for better, more reflexive science rather than abandoning scientific inquiry altogether. The basic commitment to systematic, evidence-based understanding of society remains intact, whether one is studying caste mobility in Uttar Pradesh, gender dynamics in urban workplaces, or the political economy of climate change.

Sociology today carries its Enlightenment heritage into every research project. When a scholar surveys slum-dwellers, codes interviews, or analyses census data, they are practising a method born in the 18th century and refined by thinkers like Durkheim and Marx. The faith that society can be understood and, through understanding, improved remains the quiet engine driving the discipline.
