What the MSO 002 course is really about
At its core, MSO 002 is designed to train students to study society with rigor and clarity. It is a core course offered in the M.A. Sociology and M.A. Public Administration programmes at IGNOU, which signals just how central research methodology is to both disciplines. The course blends theory with practical guidance, recognising that social research is not simply about collecting information. It is about understanding reality in a way that is systematic, defensible, and insightful.
The learning material is divided into three connected books. Each one builds on the previous, taking the learner from abstract philosophy to concrete fieldwork and finally to the craft of presenting findings. Understanding this structure early helps a researcher see how every decision, from choosing a topic to writing the final report, is linked to a larger intellectual framework.
Book 1: The philosophical roots of social research
The first book addresses a question many students overlook: why do we research the way we do? Before picking a tool, a researcher must understand the worldview behind that tool. This is where research paradigms come in.
A paradigm is essentially a set of assumptions about what reality is (ontology) and how we can know it (epistemology). These assumptions shape every methodological choice. Three widely used philosophical paradigms guide research methods and analysis: positivism, interpretivism, and critical theory. Each paradigm offers a distinct lens for studying the social world.
Positivism and the scientific approach
Positivism has deep roots in the nineteenth century, particularly in the work of Auguste Comte. Comte argued that scientific knowledge should be based on observable and measurable facts rather than metaphysical speculation, and that social sciences should adopt the same rigorous methods used in natural sciences to identify patterns and causal relationships. Positivists believe in an objective reality that exists independently of the observer. Their job, as researchers, is to measure that reality without bias.
รmile Durkheim’s classic study of suicide is often cited as a textbook example of positivist sociology. He used statistical data across countries to argue that social forces, not just individual distress, shape suicide rates. The lesson: patterns in society can be discovered through numbers.
Interpretivism and the search for meaning
Interpretivism pushes back firmly against the positivist stance. The interpretivist tradition tries to understand what it means to be human and asks questions about the meaning of social phenomena, how things work, and how people’s perceptions influence their lives. Instead of treating people like molecules to be measured, interpretivists see them as meaning-makers whose actions must be understood from the inside.
Max Weber is a key figure here. He introduced the idea of Verstehen, or empathetic understanding, arguing that researchers need to grasp the motivations behind human action. That is why interpretivist research typically favours qualitative tools such as unstructured interviews, participant observation, and ethnography.
Critical theory and the question of power
Critical theory adds another dimension. Rooted in the Frankfurt School, this tradition considers the wider oppressive nature of politics or societal influences, and often includes feminist research. Where positivism asks “what is” and interpretivism asks “what does it mean,” critical theory asks “whose interests does this knowledge serve?” It challenges researchers to expose structures of inequality, not just describe the social world.
These paradigms are not just academic labels. They shape the research question, the methods chosen, the kind of data collected, and the conclusions drawn. A researcher studying rural poverty as a positivist might count households below the poverty line. An interpretivist might live in the village for months to understand how families experience scarcity. A critical theorist might ask why certain communities remain poor generation after generation, and who benefits from that arrangement.
Book 2: Quantitative and survey methods
Once the philosophical groundwork is laid, the course moves to the practical machinery of quantitative research. This is the domain of numbers, measurement, and large-scale generalisation. Quantitative research is closely aligned with the positivist paradigm because both share a commitment to objectivity and replicability.
What quantitative research involves
Common quantitative methods include experiments, observations recorded as numbers, and surveys with closed-ended questions. The goal is to measure variables, test hypotheses, and identify patterns that can be applied beyond the specific sample studied. Structured questionnaires, standardised tests, and statistical analysis using tools like SPSS or R are typical of this approach.
Quantitative research has clear strengths. Large sample sizes allow findings to be generalised to wider populations. Numerical data can be analysed consistently by different researchers, which increases reliability. Policy-makers often find statistical evidence persuasive because it offers a clear picture of scale and trend.
The survey method
Surveys are probably the most familiar tool in this category. They involve distributing a standardised set of questions to a sample, either in person, online, or by phone. A well-designed survey can capture attitudes and behaviours across thousands of respondents in a relatively short time. National-level exercises like the Census and the National Sample Survey are classic examples of survey-based research on a massive scale.
However, surveys have limits. They work best when researchers already know what to ask and how to frame the options. For topics that are poorly understood or emotionally complex, a closed-ended questionnaire may miss the richness of real experience. This is where the second half of the methodological toolkit becomes essential.
Book 3: Qualitative methods and presenting findings
The third book turns to qualitative research. If quantitative methods are best for asking “how many” and “how often,” qualitative methods are best for asking “how” and “why.” Qualitative research involves collecting and analyzing non-numerical data, such as text, audio, or visual materials, to understand people’s experiences, perceptions, and meanings.
Core qualitative methods
The qualitative toolkit is diverse. In-depth interviews let participants share their thoughts in their own words. Focus groups reveal how people negotiate meaning collectively. Participant observation allows the researcher to witness behaviour in natural settings. Ethnography, which emerged from cultural anthropology, involves the researcher being directly immersed in the participant’s environment and produces a comprehensive account of social phenomena through a variety of data collection techniques.
Other qualitative approaches include case studies, grounded theory, narrative analysis, and discourse analysis. Each offers a different way of engaging with complexity. For instance, a case study might trace the implementation of a welfare scheme in a single district, while grounded theory would build a new explanation from patterns observed across many interviews.
Why qualitative methods matter
Social reality is messy. People do not always behave the way surveys predict, and meanings shift across contexts. Data based on methods of prolonged engagement with respondents are qualitative, also important but incomplete, while survey data are quantitative and fundamentally important but also incomplete. Neither approach alone is enough. Qualitative work is especially valuable for exploring sensitive topics, capturing marginalised voices, and generating new theoretical insights.
A study on caste discrimination in urban workplaces illustrates this well. A survey might show that Dalit employees report lower job satisfaction than upper-caste colleagues. But in-depth interviews could reveal the everyday micro-aggressions, informal exclusions, and subtle language cues that numbers alone cannot capture. Together, the two methods paint a fuller picture.
Presenting research findings
The third book also tackles an often-underrated skill: communicating what you have found. A research project that stays locked in a laptop serves no one. Presentation involves organising data clearly, citing sources properly, constructing sound arguments, and writing in a way that is accessible to the intended audience. Whether the output is a dissertation, a journal article, or a policy brief, the principles of clarity, honesty, and rigour remain the same.
Proper referencing is especially important. It signals intellectual honesty, allows readers to verify claims, and situates new work within an existing body of knowledge. Similarly, the structure of a report, with clear objectives, literature review, methodology, findings, and conclusion, helps readers follow the logic of the investigation.
Why this layered structure matters
The progression from philosophy to quantitative methods to qualitative methods and presentation is deliberate. A researcher who jumps straight to tools without understanding paradigms risks mismatching method and question. Someone who only knows surveys will miss the depth that interviews offer. Someone who only knows ethnography will struggle with large-scale comparisons.
Good social research is often pluralistic. Pragmatism is a research philosophy that seeks to bridge the gap between positivism and interpretivism, emphasising the practical consequences of knowledge and encouraging researchers to adopt a flexible, problem-solving approach. Many contemporary studies blend quantitative and qualitative methods through mixed-methods designs, recognising that complex social problems rarely yield to a single approach.
Building the researcher’s mindset
Beyond techniques, the course cultivates a way of thinking. A researcher must be curious, patient, reflexive, and ethical. Reflexivity, in particular, is essential. It means being aware of your own position, biases, and assumptions, and acknowledging how these shape what you observe and conclude. This is especially important in a diverse country where researcher and participants may belong to different social locations in terms of caste, class, gender, language, or region.
Ethics also runs through every stage. Informed consent, confidentiality, honesty in reporting, and respect for participants are not optional. They define whether research contributes to society or exploits it.
