What if the world you see, hear, and touch is not quite “out there” the way you think? What if the solid desk in front of you exists only because a mind perceives it, or only because your mind structures raw sensations into a recognizable object? These are not strange questions invented for science fiction. They sit at the heart of one of philosophy’s oldest and most influential traditions: idealism.

Idealism is the view that reality is, in some fundamental way, mental. Ideas, minds, or consciousness are not just one feature of the universe; they are the foundation on which everything else rests. To understand why this position has fascinated philosophers for centuries, we need to look closely at two thinkers who shaped it most decisively: George Berkeley and Immanuel Kant.

What idealism really claims

Most people start with a commonsense assumption: objects exist independently of us. The mountain is there whether or not anyone looks at it. The atoms in a cup of tea behave the same way even when no scientist is watching. This position, broadly called realism, treats the material world as primary and the mind as something that simply observes it.

Idealism flips this picture. It argues that what reality is like depends on how the mind works. There are several varieties of this view, and philosophers have distinguished between them carefully. According to the widely accepted distinction, ontological idealism holds that everything in reality is ultimately mental or grounded in something mental, while epistemological idealism holds that all knowledge is based on mental structures rather than things in themselves.

This distinction matters. An ontological idealist says the universe itself is mental. An epistemological idealist may remain neutral about what reality is ultimately made of, but insists we can never know it except through the categories and filters of our own cognition.

Ancient roots of the idea

Idealist thinking is not a purely Western invention. Some of the earliest defences of idealism appear in Indian philosophy, particularly in Vedanta and Shaiva Pratyabhijรฑa thought, which treat an all-pervading consciousness as the ground of reality. The Yogฤcฤra school of Mahayana Buddhism developed a “mind-only” philosophy rooted in the analysis of subjective experience. In the Greek tradition, Plato’s theory of Forms offered an early version of the idea that unchanging mental or intelligible realities are more real than the shifting material world.

These diverse traditions share a single intuition: the mind is not a bystander to reality. It is part of what makes reality what it is.

George Berkeley: to be is to be perceived

In the 18th century, the Anglo-Irish philosopher George Berkeley pushed idealism into one of its most radical forms. His position, known as subjective idealism or immaterialism, can be summed up in his famous Latin phrase, esse est percipi, which means “to be is to be perceived.”

For Berkeley, an object is nothing more than a bundle of sensory qualities: colour, shape, texture, sound, smell. When we strip away the idea of a mind perceiving these qualities, nothing coherent remains. According to the Britannica account of subjective idealism, nothing exists except minds, spirits, and their perceptions or ideas. Material objects are not independent substances; they are perceptions held together in the mind.

Why Berkeley rejected matter

John Locke, an earlier empiricist, had argued that objects possess primary qualities (like mass and extension) that exist in them independently, and secondary qualities (like colour and taste) that exist in the mind. Berkeley pushed this further. He argued that all qualities, primary and secondary, exist only in the mind of the perceiver. There is no hidden material substance behind the qualities. The qualities are the object.

As the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy explains, Berkeley’s world is mind-dependent because it is composed of ideas whose existence consists in being perceived. Yet Berkeley is not a pure subjectivist. He also posits perceivers, which he calls minds or spirits, and these are active in a way that ideas are not.

The problem of the unperceived tree

This is where Berkeley runs into a famous puzzle. If a tree exists only when perceived, what happens to it when no one is looking? Does it blink out of existence? Berkeley’s answer is theological. He argues that objects continue to exist because God perceives them continuously. God becomes the permanent perceiver who keeps the world in being.

Critics, from Samuel Johnson (who reputedly kicked a stone to “refute” Berkeley) to contemporary realists, have found this picture hard to swallow. But as philosophers have pointed out, the power of Berkeley’s arguments lies less in his positive theology and more in his challenge to our commonsense conception of matter. A world stripped of all sensory qualities, he suggests, is not a richer world beyond perception but an empty abstraction.

Immanuel Kant: the mind shapes experience

If Berkeley’s idealism seems too extreme, Kant’s transcendental idealism offers a more measured alternative, one that has shaped modern philosophy more than almost any other position.

Kant was provoked into his mature philosophy by reading David Hume, whose skepticism about causation and the self shook Kant’s earlier confidence in rationalist metaphysics. In response, Kant proposed what he called a Copernican revolution in philosophy. Instead of asking how our minds conform to objects, he asked how objects must conform to our minds.

Phenomena and noumena

The central distinction in Kant’s system is between phenomena and noumena. The phenomenal world is the world we experience, while the noumenal world is the world as it exists independently of our experience, the world of things in themselves.

According to Kant, we never have direct access to noumena. Everything we perceive is already filtered, organised, and structured by our cognitive faculties. The noumenal realm is real in some sense, but it is forever beyond the reach of human knowledge.

The categories of understanding

Kant argued that the mind is not a blank slate that passively receives information. It is an active organiser. Two kinds of structures do this work. First are the forms of intuition, which include space and time. Second are the categories of understanding, which Kant grouped under four headings: quantity, quality, relation, and modality.

These categories are not discovered in experience. They are brought to experience. Causation, substance, and unity, for example, are not properties we find in the world; they are patterns the mind imposes to make sensory input intelligible. Without these structures, we would face raw chaos, not a coherent world.

As the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy summarises, reason itself is structured with forms of experience and categories that give logical and phenomenal structure to any possible object of empirical experience. This is Kant’s transcendental idealism paired with what he called empirical realism: within experience, objects are real; but the very framework of that experience is a contribution of the mind.

How Kant differs from Berkeley

Kant was firm that his idealism was not Berkeley’s. In the Prolegomena and the Critique of Pure Reason, he argued that Berkeley’s view denied the existence of bodies in space, whereas his own view affirmed their reality within experience. According to the Stanford Encyclopedia, Kant described his idealism as merely formal, claiming that only the form of objects is due to our minds, not their matter. The sensory content of experience comes from somewhere beyond the mind. What our minds contribute is the structure that organises this content into coherent experience.

Whether Kant fully succeeded in separating his view from Berkeley’s is a question scholars still debate. But the ambition is clear: to respect the reality of the empirical world while showing that what we call reality is always shaped by the conditions of human knowing.

Why idealism still matters for research and knowledge

Idealism is not just a historical curiosity. It sits at the centre of debates about how we produce knowledge, especially in the human and social sciences.

If reality is partly constituted by the mind, then perception is not a passive process but an active engagement in which our minds shape the very reality we experience. This has direct consequences for how researchers approach their objects of study. Interpretive, phenomenological, and constructivist traditions in the social sciences draw heavily on idealist insights. They argue that social facts, institutions, and even scientific concepts are partly constructed by the categories researchers bring to them.

Contemporary cognitive science also wrestles with questions that would have felt familiar to Berkeley and Kant. How does the brain construct perception? Can we access reality as it truly is, or only reality as our cognitive architecture allows us to represent it? The question of the relationship between mind and world remains open.

Hegel and absolute idealism

After Kant, German philosophers like Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel pushed idealism further. Hegel’s absolute idealism treats history itself as the unfolding of Spirit, with reality developing through the dialectical movement of ideas. As the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy notes, these thinkers radicalised Kant’s view, arguing that things in themselves are a contradiction because a thing must be an object of consciousness to be an object at all.

Whether one accepts these later developments or not, the legacy is clear. Idealism changed how we think about the relationship between mind, knowledge, and reality, and its questions continue to shape debates in epistemology, phenomenology, and philosophy of science.
