From early morning scrolling on Instagram to late-night binge-watching on OTT platforms, media is now stitched into almost every hour of our lives. While it connects, entertains, and educates, there is a growing body of research pointing to a darker side. Excessive or unmonitored exposure to media has been linked to risky behaviours, mental health struggles, poor sleep, and even changes in how our brains develop. Understanding these risks is the first step towards building a healthier relationship with screens, especially for children and adolescents whose development is still underway.

Why the concern is growing louder
The scale of media consumption today is unprecedented. A cross-sectional study in rural Pune found that the prevalence of excess screen time among secondary school children was 83.2%, with mobile phones being the most used device. The concern is not just about time spent, but about what that time replaces: physical play, face-to-face conversations, reading, and sleep. Neuroscience research adds weight to the worry, noting that the brain is especially sensitive during the first 20 years of life, and excessive screen time during this period is particularly harmful for cognitive development.
Engagement in risky behaviours
One of the most studied concerns is the way media normalises behaviours that can be harmful. Movies, music videos, reels, and video games frequently glamorise reckless driving, substance use, and risky sexual choices. For adolescents, whose prefrontal cortex is still maturing, repeated exposure to such portrayals can shape attitudes and influence decisions.
How imitation sets in
When risky acts are shown as glamorous, rewarded, or without consequences, young viewers are more likely to imitate them. The American College of Pediatricians notes that media violence is often depicted in ways that reinforce aggressive behaviour: as justifiable, realistic, and without adverse consequences. The same principle applies to stunts, binge drinking, or reckless riding that goes viral on short-video platforms. Without guidance, young users may treat what they see as both acceptable and aspirational.
Mental health issues linked to media use
Perhaps the most widely discussed harm is the toll media takes on mental well-being. The evidence here is substantial and growing.
Anxiety, depression, and social comparison
Social media is built for comparison. Curated feeds of holidays, achievements, and filtered selfies create a constant backdrop against which users measure their own lives. Research has documented that depression is correlated with four forms of screen time: social media, television, online games, and computer use. One explanation is the upward social comparison effect, where users compare themselves unfavourably with people who appear to have perfect bodies and perfect lives. Over time, this can chip away at self-esteem and feed chronic feelings of inadequacy.
Changes in the developing brain
Brain imaging studies have started revealing physical correlates of heavy media use. One study found that more social media use was associated with a reduced volume of the hippocampus, caudate, and thalamus proper. These regions are involved in memory, reward processing, and sensory relay, which means long-term effects may extend well beyond mood to learning and attention.
Sedentary lifestyles and physical health
Every hour spent scrolling or streaming is typically an hour not spent moving. This sedentary tilt has serious physical consequences. A study on screen viewing time in children aged 3-15 noted that watching TV and using smartphones and tablets have been shown to significantly reduce physical activity, cause dry eyes, and reduce school performance.
Obesity, posture, and eye strain
Prolonged sitting in front of screens contributes to weight gain, poor posture, and musculoskeletal pain. According to a public health review, excessive screen use contributes to sedentary lifestyles, causing health issues like obesity, vision problems, and poor posture. Children who do not play outdoors for at least two hours a day are particularly vulnerable. Snacking while watching, often on ultra-processed foods advertised on the same platforms, compounds the problem.
Disrupted sleep patterns
Sleep is where growing bodies and minds reset. Media, unfortunately, is one of its biggest modern disruptors. Almost 90% of the studies included in a systematic review indicated that increased screen viewing time is associated with adverse sleep outcomes.
The blue light and content problem
Two mechanisms are at play. First, the blue light from screens suppresses melatonin, the hormone that signals the body to sleep. Second, the emotionally engaging nature of games, shows, and social feeds keeps the mind aroused well past bedtime. Research on Indian students and professionals has shown that social media use and the “fear of missing out” effect affect sleep, with these effects exacerbated by anxiety and depression influencing compulsive social media use. Insufficient sleep then feeds back into irritability, poor concentration, and weakened immunity.
Increased aggression and reduced empathy
One of the oldest and most replicated findings in media research concerns violent content. Watching or playing through violent scenarios repeatedly can desensitise viewers and prime aggressive responses.
What the evidence shows
A major review observed that exposure to violent content can decrease empathy and cause increased aggressive thoughts, anger, and aggressive behaviour. This is not limited to extreme cases. Everyday exposure through cartoons, action films, or first-person shooter games can, over time, lower the threshold for aggressive reactions in real-life conflicts. The American Academy of Pediatrics has pointed out that significant exposure to media violence increases the risk of aggressive behaviour in certain children and adolescents, desensitizes them to violence, and makes them believe that the world is a ‘meaner and scarier’ place than it is.
Erosion of empathy
Empathy develops through real relationships, reading cues, and facing emotional consequences. When most of a child’s emotional input comes from edited, sensationalised content, they may find it harder to recognise distress in others or respond with warmth. Video games that reward violent acts without showing consequences can further blunt this crucial social skill.
Cyberbullying and online harassment
Among the harms unique to the digital era, cyberbullying has emerged as a defining concern. Unlike traditional bullying, it follows the victim home, spreads rapidly, and often remains invisible to adults.
The Indian picture
The scale is sobering. A meta-analysis concluded that the pooled prevalence of cyberbullying among Indian adolescents is around 19%, though some studies have reported figures much higher in specific cities. Reporting rates are alarmingly low, with around 9.2% of 630 adolescents surveyed in the Delhi-NCR region having experienced cyberbullying and half of them not reporting it to teachers, guardians, or social media companies.
Mental health consequences
The psychological fallout is severe. A three-year cohort study in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar found that adolescents who experienced cyberbullying victimisation were 2.07 times more likely to have depressive symptoms and 2.50 times more likely to have suicidal ideation compared to peers with no such experience. These are not short-term effects. The shame, isolation, and anxiety that follow online humiliation can persist into young adulthood, affecting relationships, careers, and self-worth.
Attention, learning, and developmental delays
Media use affects not only mood and behaviour but also cognition. Rapid scene changes, notifications, and short-form content train the brain to expect constant stimulation. This can make sustained focus on textbooks, lectures, or even conversations feel difficult.
Research on Indian children has found associations between screen use and deficits in attention, intelligence, and social skills normally attained at a particular age, along with increased incidences of psychiatric illnesses like depression, anxiety, and psychopathological symptoms. For younger children, excessive passive screen time can also delay language and social milestones because it replaces the back-and-forth interaction that fuels early learning.
The way forward: shared responsibility
Addressing these harms is not about banning media. It is about building healthier habits and stronger safeguards. The Indian Academy of Pediatrics has issued specific guidelines on screen time and digital wellness, recommending that screens be avoided for children under two and limited thereafter. Schools can integrate digital literacy into curricula, teaching students how algorithms work, how to spot misinformation, and how to respond to online harassment.
What parents and educators can do
Practical steps include keeping screens out of bedrooms, setting clear family rules on device-free meals, modelling balanced use as adults, and creating space for hobbies that do not involve screens. Watching content together and discussing it helps young viewers develop critical judgement rather than passive consumption. For adolescents facing online harassment, adults need to signal clearly that reporting will be met with support, not blame or device confiscation.
The policy dimension
Policymakers also have a role. Stricter age-appropriate content standards, platform accountability on algorithmic amplification, and investment in mental health services in schools can reduce the structural pressure on individuals. Public health campaigns that normalise conversations about mental well-being and digital balance, similar to anti-tobacco messaging, can gradually shift cultural attitudes.
