Scroll through any social feed for ten minutes and you will likely encounter a curated parade of vacations, fitness transformations, promotions, and flawless selfies. It can feel informative, even entertaining, but a growing body of psychological research suggests that what happens in our minds during that scroll is far from harmless. The relationship between media use, especially social media, and mental well-being has become one of the most studied questions in contemporary psychology, and the findings paint a complex picture worth examining closely.

The rise of a digital mental health crisis

Over the past decade, rates of anxiety, depression, and loneliness among young people have climbed sharply, and researchers have repeatedly pointed toward one common thread running through modern life: the smartphone and the social platforms it carries. Over time, the brain begins to expect and crave these micro-rewards. When approval does not arrive as expected, users can experience a dip in self-worth, which drives them back to the platform to try again. The comparison trap

Social platforms are sometimes described as a “highlight reel” because users typically share their best moments while hiding struggles and ordinary days. This is known as upward social comparison, and it has a measurable psychological cost.

A study on young adults found that upward comparisons on Instagram and Facebook negatively mediated the relationship between social networking use and self-esteem, while also positively predicting depressive symptoms. In simpler terms, the more we measure ourselves against people who appear to be doing better, the worse we feel about ourselves, and the more depressed we are likely to become.

Body image, colourism, and curated perfection

For young people, and especially young women, the comparison trap often centres on physical appearance. Filters, carefully chosen angles, and professional editing have set new and often impossible standards for how bodies and faces should look. A study focused on young adults in India found that social comparison on Instagram was significantly linked to colourism and to mental health issues, revealing how global beauty ideals can take on culturally specific and harmful forms.

The interactive nature of these platforms encourages users to seek validation for their appearance, creating dopamine-driven feedback loops that make physical appearance a central source of self-esteem, which can then spiral into obsessive body monitoring, disordered eating patterns, and deeper anxiety.

Facebook depression: a recognised phenomenon

The clinical community has taken this seriously enough to coin a specific term for what happens when heavy social media use begins to produce mood disorders. Back in 2011, the American Academy of Pediatrics popularised the term Facebook depression, defining it as depression that develops when preteens and teens spend a great deal of time on social networking sites and then begin to exhibit classic symptoms of depression. Perhaps nothing illustrates how deeply our devices have entered our nervous systems more clearly than Phantom Vibration Syndrome, the sensation that your phone is buzzing in your pocket when it is not. It sounds harmless, even comical, but researchers classify it as a tactile hallucination, where the brain perceives a stimulation that is not actually present.

The prevalence is striking. According to reports summarising multiple studies, reported rates of phantom phone sensations range from roughly 30% to almost 90% of users, with some experiencing them daily. A study of medical interns is particularly telling: at the start of their internship, about 78% of new doctors experienced phantom vibration, and three months later that figure had risen to nearly 96%, alongside increases in anxiety and depression scores, as reported by BrainFacts.org.

What this says about our relationship with technology

Researchers suggest that these hallucinations reflect a nervous system that has been conditioned to constantly anticipate notifications. The takeaway is clear: the more tightly we bind our attention to our devices, the more our nervous systems reorganise themselves around them, sometimes in disorienting ways.

The need for validation and the fear of missing out

Every post becomes a small experiment in self-worth. Will this photo get enough likes? Will that caption spark comments? Psychologists call this pattern validation seeking, and when combined with the dopamine feedback loop mentioned earlier, it can become compulsive. Alongside it runs FOMO, or fear of missing out, the anxious feeling that something better is happening elsewhere and that we need to keep checking to stay in the loop. Both mechanisms keep users tethered to their phones, even when they would rather not be.

The protective power of balance

It is important to note that social media is not uniformly harmful. Interestingly, research summarised by the Child Mind Institute found that girls who use social media heavily but also maintain a high level of face-to-face interaction do not show the same rise in depressive symptoms as those who rely on online connection alone. For geographically isolated or marginalised young people, online communities can even be lifelines, offering acceptance that may be missing in their immediate surroundings.

The difference seems to lie in how social media is used. Passive scrolling, endless comparison, and isolation from real-world contact carry the greatest risk, while active engagement with trusted friends, meaningful conversations, and participation in supportive communities can be genuinely beneficial.

Building a healthier relationship with screens

Recognising the patterns is the first step towards changing them. Practical interventions include setting daily time limits on apps, disabling non-essential notifications, keeping phones out of bedrooms at night, and deliberately prioritising in-person activities that build identity and self-confidence. Unfollowing accounts that consistently trigger negative feelings and curating a feed that supports well-being rather than erodes it can make a measurable difference.
