The question of whether what we watch on screen bleeds into what we do in real life has followed psychologists, parents, and policymakers for decades. When a teenager re-enacts a stunt from a video game, or when a mass shooter shows up at a cinema dressed like a comic-book villain, the same unsettling question resurfaces: can media violence actually push people toward real-world crime? The answer, unsurprisingly, is neither a clean yes nor a clean no – but the psychological research paints a picture that is far more nuanced, and far more interesting, than either side of the debate usually admits.

What counts as media violence?
Before getting into effects, it helps to know what researchers are even measuring. Most scholars define media violence as visual portrayals of acts of physical aggression by one human or human-like character against another. That covers a surprisingly wide spectrum – action films, crime dramas, war video games, music videos, and even news coverage of shootings and bombings. The concern is not merely that such content exists, but that audiences – especially children and adolescents – absorb it in enormous quantities. One widely cited estimate suggests that children are exposed to roughly 10,000 violent crimes in the media each year – a figure that has only grown in the streaming era.
The social learning model of aggression
The foundational idea behind the media-violence debate comes from psychologist Albert Bandura. In the early 1960s, Bandura ran what would become one of the most famous studies in psychology: the Bobo doll experiment. Preschoolers watched an adult punch, kick, and verbally abuse an inflatable clown doll. When later left alone with the same doll, children who had seen the aggressive model were significantly more aggressive, with boys copying male adults the most.
From this simple setup, Bandura built his Social Learning Theory, which argues that behaviour – including aggression – is learned through observation, imitation, and modelling. Crucially, the modelled behaviour does not have to come from a parent or a real person in the room. Children can pick up aggressive scripts from fictional characters on television and in films. The child sees a character solve a conflict with a fist or a gun, sees no meaningful punishment, and quietly files that script away as one possible way to respond to frustration.
Why modelling matters for crime
Bandura’s work reframed aggression from something purely biological or instinctive into something that could be taught – and, by extension, untaught. If the hero of a popular film solves every problem by shooting people, viewers learn not only that violence works, but that it is socially acceptable when used by the “right” person for the “right” reason. Over time, this can desensitize viewers to violence and blur their sense of when force is justified.
The general aggression model
Building on Bandura’s foundations, psychologists Craig Anderson and Brad Bushman proposed the General Aggression Model (GAM) in 2002. GAM is a broader framework that integrates several earlier theories – social learning theory, cognitive neoassociation theory, and script theory – into a single explanation of how aggression develops and erupts.
The model describes a cyclical interaction between a person and their environment. Person variables such as trait hostility, mood, and attitudes toward aggression interact with situation variables like exposure to real-world or media violence to influence an individual’s present internal state – specifically cognition, affect, and arousal. In plain terms, who you are collides with what you are seeing, and that collision shapes what you think, feel, and how physiologically wound-up you become at any given moment.
Violent cognitive scripts
A central idea in GAM – one that matters enormously for understanding crime – is the development of cognitive scripts. Scripts are mental shortcuts for how situations typically unfold. When children are frequently exposed to aggressive or violent media, they incorporate what they are watching into their scripts and knowledge structures. A child might, for example, develop scripts about what items can be used as weapons, how to use them, and in what situations weapons are appropriate.
Once encoded, these scripts can be triggered automatically. A frustrating encounter at school or work – a shove in a crowd, a sharp word from a stranger – can unconsciously activate an aggressive script built from hundreds of hours of violent content. The person does not need to consciously decide to be aggressive; their brain simply retrieves the most accessible response.
Short-term versus long-term effects
Psychologists distinguish between short-term and long-term effects, and the mechanisms are different. In the short term, a violent film or game increases arousal, priming hostile thoughts and making aggressive responses more likely in the minutes and hours after exposure. Over the long term, repeated exposure gradually shapes personality by building aggressive knowledge structures into someone’s default way of thinking. Fictional television and film violence contribute to both a short-term and a long-term increase in aggression and violence in young viewers, according to peer-reviewed reviews.
What the longitudinal evidence actually shows
Laboratory studies are one thing; real lives are another. Some of the most compelling evidence comes from studies that follow children into adulthood. Research by psychologists L. Rowell Huesmann and Leonard Eron found that children who watched many hours of violence on television in elementary school tended to show higher levels of aggressive behavior as teenagers, and those who had watched a lot of TV violence at age eight were more likely to be arrested and prosecuted for criminal acts as adults.
Interestingly, being aggressive as a child did not predict watching more violent TV later – suggesting the TV exposure was a cause, not just a symptom. A 2010 review led by Craig Anderson concluded that exposure to violent video games is a causal risk factor for increased aggressive behaviour, aggressive cognition, and aggressive affect and for decreased empathy and prosocial behaviour.
The scale of the effect
How large is the effect, really? Researchers sometimes compare it to other public-health risks. In meta-analyses, the average correlation between media-violence exposure and aggression sits between well-established environmental hazards – larger than many other risks society takes seriously, though smaller than smoking’s link to lung cancer. The American Psychological Association treats it as one of several contributing factors rather than a single cause.
The case against a direct link
In the interest of intellectual honesty, it is worth noting that the relationship is contested. Critics argue that many studies measure mild aggression – like blasting a partner with loud noise in a lab – rather than real criminal violence. They point out that media violence has been consistently on the rise since the 1950s, yet violent crime rates have cycled up and down throughout history and even fell dramatically in the mid-1990s while violent video games became mainstream.
A methodological review in the European Journal on Criminal Policy and Research concluded that when integrated with other long-term studies on the development of crime, the link between media violence and crime is weak after other environmental factors are taken into account. In other words, factors like poverty, family breakdown, peer groups, substance abuse, and prior trauma likely matter much more than media consumption alone.
High-profile cases and the copycat question
Few events put this debate into sharper focus than the 2012 mass shooting in Aurora, Colorado. On July 20, 2012, a 24-year-old man dressed in tactical clothing set off tear gas grenades and shot into the audience at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises, killing 12 people and wounding 70 others. The shooter had dyed his hair reddish-orange, and early reports claimed he called himself “The Joker” – the iconic Batman villain played by Heath Ledger.
On the surface, this looked like the perfect case study for media-violence theorists: a killer apparently adopting the identity of a violent fictional character. But the picture turned out to be more complicated. The Colorado district attorney who prosecuted the case later said the shooter never actually called himself The Joker and blamed federal officials for the rumour. In a later book, the prosecutor suggested that if it had been The Avengers or Jurassic World, the shooter would have been there – it had nothing to do with Batman.
What this case illustrates is not that movies make mass shooters, but that media can become a stage and a symbolic vocabulary for pre-existing violent impulses. A troubled individual may latch onto a blockbuster release because of the crowd size, the symbolism, or the public attention it guarantees – not because the film itself taught them to kill. Still, the event prompted real concern about copycat shootings, with cinemas and police departments around the world increasing security.
Imitation effects in the news
A related phenomenon is the copycat effect of news coverage itself. Saturation reporting on mass shootings, especially coverage that dwells on the shooter’s name, face, manifesto, and body count, has been linked to spikes in similar incidents in the following weeks. This has prompted some newsrooms to adopt “no notoriety” guidelines that minimize sensational coverage of perpetrators.
The Indian context
Discussions of media violence often focus on American school shootings, but the question matters closer to home too. The rapid penetration of smartphones, inexpensive data, and streaming platforms has exposed millions of young people to violent content from around the world – often without any adult mediation. Concerns about web series featuring graphic gangster violence, first-person shooter games, and true-crime documentaries that have become prolific and popular on television by the 2020s, including through multiple streaming platforms, mirror debates in other countries.
The policy response has so far been uneven – ranging from certification by the Central Board of Film Certification, to periodic bans on specific games like PUBG Mobile in 2020, to self-regulatory codes adopted by OTT platforms. Whether these interventions meaningfully reduce exposure, or simply push consumption underground, remains an open question for researchers and regulators.
Why context and individual differences matter
If there is one overarching lesson from decades of research, it is that media violence does not affect everyone equally. The relationship between media violence and real-world violence and aggression is moderated by the nature of the media content and characteristics of and social influences on the individual exposed to that content. Protective factors – supportive families, school engagement, strong peer networks, media literacy – can blunt the effects considerably. Risk factors – trait aggression, abusive home environments, untreated mental illness, easy access to weapons – can amplify them.
This is why most serious researchers reject both extreme positions. Violent media is neither a magical cause of crime nor an entirely innocent pastime. It is one risk factor among many, interacting in complex ways with biology, upbringing, and circumstance.
What can be done
Practical responses cluster around three ideas. First, parental mediation: adults discussing violent content with children, contextualizing what they see, and setting limits on exposure during developmentally sensitive years. Second, media literacy education in schools, which teaches young people to critically decode the stories they consume rather than absorb them passively. Third, content regulation and platform responsibility, including age-appropriate classification, responsible reporting guidelines for news coverage of violence, and platform-level controls for children.
