Understanding this long arc helps us see that today’s smartphone in your pocket is the latest chapter in a very old human project.

Before the printed word: ancient roots of mass communication
Long before broadcast towers or fibre optic cables, people were already figuring out how to share a message with more than one person at a time. The earliest forms of media were painfully physical: marks on cave walls, symbols carved into stone, and messages shouted in marketplaces. Some of the oldest cave paintings are more than 40,000 years old, and they represent humanity’s first real attempts to record experience for others to see.
As civilisations grew more organised, so did their need to record things. Ancient Mesopotamians pressed cuneiform into wet clay tablets, while Egyptians wrote on papyrus made from reeds along the Nile. In Rome, a daily gazette called Acta Diurna appeared as early as 131 BCE, informing citizens of political and social happenings. China developed its own official court bulletins, sometimes called palace reports, and later invented woodblock printing during the Tang Dynasty. These were the original newspapers, even if they looked nothing like what we recognise today.
The topic summary points to the ancient Greek philosopher Diogenes, who reportedly used public displays and pointed gestures to spread his ideas across the city. His style was theatrical on purpose; in an age without printing, the only way to go “viral” was to make a spectacle that people would talk about afterwards. Why the oral tradition still matters
Even with all these written forms, the dominant medium for most of human history was simply the spoken word. Epic poems like Homer’s Odyssey were memorised and recited, not read. In the subcontinent, oral storytelling carried the Vedas, the Mahabharata, and countless folk traditions across generations long before they were committed to palm-leaf manuscripts. The oral tradition reminds us that “media” doesn’t always need technology; sometimes it just needs a voice, a crowd, and a story worth repeating.
The printing press: the first true media revolution
If you had to pick a single invention that changed media forever, most historians would point to one name: Johannes Gutenberg. Around 1440, the German goldsmith from Mainz invented the movable-type printing press, which kicked off what we now call the Printing Revolution. Although movable type had already been used in China and Korea, Gutenberg’s mechanical system made printing dramatically faster and cheaper in Europe.
To appreciate just how big a leap this was, consider the numbers. A hand-copying scribe could produce around forty pages in a workday. A single Renaissance printing press, by contrast, could produce up to 3,600 pages per workday. Gutenberg’s famous 42-line Bible, printed around 1455, was the first major book produced using this method, and within decades printing presses had spread across Europe. By 1500, at least half a million printed books were in circulation, ranging from Columbus’s account of the New World to classical Greek texts.
The cultural consequences were enormous. Gutenberg’s press helped power the Renaissance, the Protestant Reformation, the Age of Enlightenment, and the Scientific Revolution by making the mass consumption of ideas possible for the first time in history. Literacy rates rose, scientific findings could be verified and built upon across countries, and ordinary people gained access to religious texts they had previously only heard interpreted by priests. It was the 15th century’s version of the internet, and like the internet, it disrupted almost every institution it touched.
The rise of newspapers and the birth of public discourse
Once printing became cheap enough, a new format emerged: the regularly published newspaper. Johann Carolus published what is widely considered the world’s first newspaper, Relation aller Fรผrnemmen und gedenckwรผrdigen Historien, in Strasbourg in 1605. Others followed quickly across Europe. The London Gazette, established in 1665, set patterns we still recognise: regular publication schedules, professional journalism, and the idea of news as a commodity people would pay for.
Newspapers introduced several concepts that still shape media today. Timeliness meant information had expiration dates. Objectivity emerged as a journalistic ideal. Public discourse became possible because large groups of strangers were suddenly reading the same things at the same time. And commercial viability through advertising and subscriptions turned journalism into a sustainable profession.
In India, the first newspaper was James Augustus Hicky’s Bengal Gazette, launched in Calcutta in 1780. The Indian press would go on to play an extraordinary role in the freedom struggle, with publications edited by figures like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Mahatma Gandhi, and Maulana Azad shaping public opinion against colonial rule. Newspapers weren’t just reporting history; they were making it.
Photography, telegraph, and the shrinking world
The 19th century brought a flood of innovations that transformed media from something read to something seen, heard, and transmitted across continents almost instantly. Photography, perfected in the 1830s and 1840s, added a powerful new dimension: for the first time, real scenes could be captured and reproduced exactly as they appeared. News stopped being only about words and became visual evidence.
Then came the electrical telegraph. Patented in the United States by Samuel Morse in 1837, the telegraph essentially collapsed distance. A message that once took weeks to travel from London to Bombay by ship could now arrive in minutes over copper wire. When the transatlantic telegraph cable was completed in 1858, nearly instantaneous communication between continents became reality for the first time.
From telephone to radio to television
Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone in 1876 made voice-to-voice long-distance communication possible. Guglielmo Marconi’s experiments with wireless telegraphy at the turn of the 20th century laid the groundwork for radio, which became a mass medium in the 1920s. Suddenly a single announcer could speak into a microphone in one city and be heard by millions in their homes across a country.
Television took this one step further by adding moving images. Philo Farnsworth made the first successful TV transmission in the late 1920s, and by the 1950s, black and white television sets became widespread, transforming home entertainment. In India, television arrived in 1959 with experimental broadcasts from Delhi, slowly expanding through Doordarshan until the colour broadcast of the 1982 Asian Games marked a national turning point.
These broadcast technologies did something profound: they created the possibility of a simultaneous national experience. Everyone who watched the moon landing in 1969 saw it at the same moment. Everyone who tuned in to Ramayan on Doordarshan on Sunday mornings in the late 1980s became part of one giant audience. Media was no longer just information; it was shared cultural ritual.
The internet and the World Wide Web: media goes digital
The roots of the internet reach back to the Cold War 1960s, when the U.S. Defense Department’s ARPA agency began funding research into a computer network that could survive a nuclear attack. ARPANET, the ancestor of today’s internet, sent its first message in 1969 – a partial transmission of the word “LOGIN” between computers at UCLA and Stanford that crashed after two letters.
For nearly two decades, the internet remained a niche tool for academics and military researchers. What transformed it into a mass medium was the World Wide Web. Tim Berners-Lee, a British scientist working at CERN, invented the web in 1989 to solve a practical problem: physicists from around the world needed an easier way to share research documents. He proposed a system of hyperlinked documents, wrote the first web browser and server by the end of 1990, and published the first website on 20 December 1990.
The crucial moment for the web’s global spread came in April 1993, when CERN agreed to make the underlying code available on a royalty-free basis, forever. This single decision is often cited as one of the most consequential in modern history. Had the web been patented, it might never have become the open, universal medium we know today. The launch of the Mosaic browser later that year made the web accessible to non-technical users, and websites multiplied from 130 in 1993 to over 100,000 by the start of 1996.
The social media era and the mobile revolution
The early 2000s introduced a qualitative shift. Platforms like Facebook (2004), YouTube (2005), and Twitter (2006) turned the internet from an information network into a social ecosystem. For the first time in media history, the distinction between producer and consumer collapsed; a single tweet could reach millions, and ordinary people with smartphones could break news faster than traditional newsrooms.
Smartphones then made this media environment constantly available. In India, cheap data plans – especially after the launch of Reliance Jio in 2016 – brought hundreds of millions of first-time internet users online almost overnight, often encountering the web primarily through WhatsApp, YouTube, and regional-language social platforms rather than through desktop browsing. This has produced a media landscape that looks different from the Western experience, with voice messaging, video-first consumption, and vernacular content taking centre stage.
What this long journey teaches us
Looking back across this entire arc – from Diogenes’s public performances to push notifications on your phone – a few patterns stand out. Every new medium has initially been greeted with suspicion by the powerful and delight by everyone else. Every new medium has eventually coexisted with older ones rather than replacing them entirely; newspapers survived radio, radio survived television, and books have survived the internet. And every new medium has reshaped politics, religion, and social life in ways that were almost impossible to predict at the time.
We are living through another of these pivotal moments right now. Artificial intelligence, generative media, and immersive technologies are beginning to do to the digital age what the printing press did to the medieval world. The fundamental human drives that led someone to carve symbols into a cave wall are the same drives pulling you to open your phone right now: the urge to know, to connect, to be heard, and to belong.
