The videos you watch, the headlines you skim, and the posts you pause on all feed back into what you see next – and eventually into how you think, feel, and decide. Media and social media are no longer just sources of entertainment or information; they have become active participants in shaping human cognition and behaviour, for better and for worse.

Every notification, like, and swipe is a tiny nudge to the brain. Researchers studying the digital revolution have noted that digital media affects cognition, emotional processing, and even brain anatomy, with impacts depending on total screen time and the specific activities people engage in online. Neuroscientists have reported that intensive interactions with social media can correlate with gray-matter alterations in brain areas involved in addictive behaviour, suggesting that heavy use doesn’t just change habits – it leaves biological traces.
This matters because social media is no longer a side activity. It is woven into how we learn, earn, vote, shop, grieve, and bond. A few seconds of scrolling can trigger reward circuits, influence mood, or shift opinions. Understanding this dual impact – positive and negative – is essential for anyone who wants to use these platforms thoughtfully rather than be used by them.
The bright side: cognitive boosts and connection
Before painting everything in gloomy colours, it’s worth recognising that digital media can genuinely sharpen the mind. One of the most cited pieces of evidence comes from a UCLA study led by Dr. Gary Small, which used fMRI scans to observe what happens in the brains of older adults while they searched the internet. The researchers found that internet searching engages complicated brain activity that may help exercise and improve brain function, especially in middle-aged and older adults.
A follow-up study was even more striking. After just one week of internet training at home, older participants with little prior experience began to show brain activation patterns similar to experienced users. Dr. Small’s team suggested that searching online may be a simple form of brain exercise that could enhance cognition in older adults. In a country with a rapidly ageing population, this is a genuinely hopeful finding.
Learning, community, and identity
Beyond cognition, social media can support learning and a sense of belonging. Online study groups, YouTube tutorials, WhatsApp communities, and professional networks give people access to knowledge that older generations simply did not have. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, for example, many students continued their education only because digital platforms made it possible. Researchers have also observed that moderate social media use on specific platforms can promote mental health against social isolation and stress, particularly when people are physically cut off from others.
Social media also provides a rare space for marginalised voices, minority communities, and young people exploring their identities. For many, it is where they first encounter peers who share their experiences, values, or struggles.
The dark side: confirmation bias and the algorithm trap
The same personalisation that makes feeds feel relevant also quietly narrows the mind. Platforms use sophisticated predictive models built from past behaviour to maximise engagement, and that engagement is highest when content confirms what we already believe. Over time, this creates what scholars describe as filter bubbles and echo chambers.
A systematic review of a decade of research on youth and social media found that algorithmic systems structurally amplify ideological homogeneity, reinforcing selective exposure and limiting viewpoint diversity. In simpler terms: the more you lean one way, the more one-sided your feed becomes. This reinforces confirmation bias – the human tendency to seek out information that supports existing beliefs while ignoring what challenges them.
Why this matters for behaviour
Confirmation bias on social media doesn’t just distort opinions; it changes behaviour. People who live inside ideological bubbles are more likely to share unverified content, dismiss fact-checks, and distrust those outside their group. During the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers examining polarisation on social media noted that personalised content and news feeds can lead to filter bubbles that create tunnel vision for individuals and groups. The consequences range from harmless disagreements to dangerous misinformation about vaccines, elections, and communal issues.
Social comparison and the ‘Facebook Depression’ phenomenon
One of the most well-documented harms of social media involves mental health, particularly among teenagers and young adults. The term Facebook Depression was coined to describe depressive symptoms that develop after spending a lot of time on social networking sites, often linked to constant exposure to curated, idealised images of other people’s lives.
The mechanism is social comparison. On social media, the average user is flooded with highlight reels – vacations, promotions, weddings, glowing skin, fit bodies. Psychologists note that comparisons on social media are more likely to be upward, since users tend to present an idealised version of themselves and their lives. Upward comparisons – measuring yourself against someone perceived as better off – are strongly linked to lower self-esteem and higher depressive symptoms.
Clinicians working with adolescents have observed that loss of self-esteem, especially in teenage girls comparing themselves to curated images, may partly explain rising rates of depression. Studies reviewed in this area report that teens spending the most time on platforms like Instagram and Facebook show substantially higher rates of reported depression than peers who spend less time online.
The body image problem
Image-heavy platforms have added a new layer to an old problem. Filtered selfies, edited bodies, and influencer-led beauty standards have created an environment of near-constant visual judgement. A review of research on body image found that platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok have become arenas of intense social comparison where users continuously evaluate their worth against digitally enhanced portrayals of others. For young people still forming their identities, this can be deeply destabilising.
Attention, memory, and the shape of young minds
Beyond mood, social media is changing cognitive functions themselves – how long we can focus, how well we remember, how quickly we decide. A systematic review of twenty-three studies on children and young adults found that excessive social media use was associated with impaired attention, reduced working memory, and diminished executive functioning, particularly among adolescents with social media addiction. Researchers also reported that excessive social media use was linked to impaired decision-making skills and increased impulsivity.
The design of the platforms plays a role. Infinite scroll, autoplay, push notifications, and the unpredictable reward of likes keep the brain in a low-grade state of anticipation. Over time, this trains attention to jump rather than settle – a trade-off that can affect schoolwork, reading, and deep thinking.
But the picture is not one-sided
Importantly, not every study agrees that social media is uniformly harmful. Some large-scale research has found only weak links between digital technology use and well-being. A review by the Reuters Institute argued that algorithmic selection on search engines and social platforms generally leads to slightly more diverse news consumption, not less, challenging the strongest version of the filter bubble thesis. The effect of social media on any individual depends heavily on what they do online, how long they spend, and their underlying psychological state.
The COVID-19 stress test
If there was ever a moment that revealed both sides of social media’s power, it was the pandemic. With lockdowns cutting off physical contact, people turned to their phones for information, connection, and comfort. For many, platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram became lifelines. For others, they became sources of panic.
A meta-analysis of fourteen cross-sectional studies found that the increase in time spent on social media during the pandemic was associated with symptoms of anxiety and depression. Another systematic review reported that relatively high rates of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms were seen after exposure to social media coverage of COVID-19 news in the general population. Doom-scrolling, constant case updates, and misinformation created a stew of fear and fatigue.
Yet the same research acknowledges that responsible use of social media helped spread awareness, provided emotional support, and enabled people in isolation to maintain social ties. The same platform that worsened one person’s anxiety kept another person sane. That is the essence of the dual impact.
Building a healthier relationship with media
Knowing all this, what can be done? The answer is not to abandon social media – that ship has sailed – but to use it with awareness. A few principles help:
Notice your emotional state after scrolling. If you consistently feel worse, that is useful data. Diversify your inputs by deliberately following accounts and outlets outside your usual bubble. Protect sleep and attention by keeping phones away from the bed and muting non-essential notifications. Favour active use – messaging, creating, commenting – over passive scrolling, which research links more strongly to low mood.
Parents, educators, and policymakers also have roles to play. Digital literacy needs to be treated as seriously as basic literacy, especially for children growing up with smartphones in their hands. Regulators are increasingly asking platforms to be transparent about how their algorithms work and how they affect young users.
