Turn on your phone, scroll through a feed, and within minutes your thoughts, moods, and even opinions can shift without you noticing. This is not an accident. Media, in all its forms, is a powerful force that quietly rewires how we think, feel, and act. From the news we watch to the reels we consume, every piece of content leaves a fingerprint on our cognition and behaviour. Understanding this influence is no longer optional – it is essential for anyone who wants to think clearly in a noisy world.

The invisible hand of media on our minds
Media shapes three things in us: perception (how we see the world), attitudes (what we believe about it), and behaviour (what we do in it). A news channel choosing which story to lead with tells you what matters. An influencer’s morning routine tells you what a “good” life looks like. A WhatsApp forward tells you who to trust and who to fear. None of this is neutral – each exposure nudges the mind in a particular direction.
Psychologists have long argued that human cognition is not built to resist constant messaging. Our brains evolved to take mental shortcuts. When something feels familiar, we assume it is true. When we see behaviour repeated, we assume it is normal. Media exploits both tendencies at scale, and that is where its true power lies.
Why the brain is vulnerable
The brain processes visual information extremely quickly. It also values efficiency over accuracy. So when we are bombarded with thousands of messages daily, we rely on emotional cues rather than careful analysis. A shocking headline, a dramatic image, or an angry voice cuts through the noise faster than a balanced report. Over time, this emotional diet shapes our default way of seeing things – often without our awareness.
Bandura’s Bobo doll experiment: how we learn by watching
No discussion about media’s influence on behaviour is complete without Albert Bandura’s famous Bobo doll experiment. Conducted at Stanford University in 1961, the study became a turning point in psychology. Bandura wanted to answer a question that was making parents and policymakers anxious: can children learn aggression simply by watching it?
The setup was simple but clever. Seventy-two children between the ages of three and six were split into groups. One group watched an adult punch, kick, and yell at an inflatable Bobo doll. Another group saw the adult behave calmly. A third group saw no model at all. Later, every child was placed in a room with the same Bobo doll and various toys.
The results were startling. Children who had watched the aggressive adult were far more likely to imitate the violent behaviour – boys especially copied male adult models, reproducing both the physical punches and the verbal insults. Children who saw the calm model or no model acted peacefully. Bandura concluded that observation alone – without any reward or punishment – was enough to teach new behaviour.
From a doll to a screen
In a follow-up study in 1963, Bandura pushed the idea further. He replaced the live model with a filmed version and even a cartoon of a cat behaving aggressively. The results held. Children imitated aggression whether they saw it performed live, on film, or through animation. That finding became the foundation of Social Learning Theory and the scientific basis for decades of debate about violence on television, in films, and now in video games and short-form videos.
A follow-up cross-cultural study by Huesmann, Lagerspetz, and Eron in the 1980s tracked children over time and found that those who watched more violent television were more likely to behave aggressively later in life, lending weight to Bandura’s original claim. Today, as children spend hours watching reels, gaming streams, and action-packed content, the Bobo doll lesson feels more relevant than ever: what we watch, we often become.
The illusion of truth: how repetition rewires belief
If observation shapes behaviour, repetition shapes belief. One of the most studied phenomena in cognitive psychology is the illusory truth effect – the tendency to believe a statement simply because we have heard it before. It doesn’t matter whether the claim is accurate, plausible, or even contradicts what we already know. Repetition alone gives it the ring of truth.
The effect was first documented in a 1977 study at Villanova and Temple Universities, where researchers Lynn Hasher, David Goldstein, and Thomas Toppino asked college students to rate trivia statements as true or false across three sessions held two weeks apart. Participants consistently rated repeated statements as more truthful over time, even when the statements were false. Their confidence in novel, unrepeated statements stayed flat – only repetition moved the needle.
Why familiarity feels like truth
The mechanism behind the illusion is something psychologists call processing fluency. When information is easy to process – because we’ve seen it before – the brain interprets that ease as a signal of accuracy. In other words, “this feels familiar” gets mistranslated as “this must be true”. A meta-analysis of the effect shows it is consistent across many types of content, from trivia facts to news headlines to product claims.
What makes this effect particularly dangerous is that it works even against our better judgment. Researchers have shown that even people with correct prior knowledge continue to rate repeated falsehoods as more truthful after multiple exposures. Intelligence and expertise, it turns out, offer little protection.
Why this matters on social media
Scroll through any feed and you’ll see the illusion at work. A misleading claim shared by ten different accounts starts to feel credible. A rumour repeated across news channels begins to resemble consensus. A 2023 study in Cognition found that a single repetition of a claim was enough to increase its perceived accuracy – and people were then more likely to share it with others. Social media algorithms, which reward repetition through engagement loops, act as accelerants for this cognitive bias.
COVID-19 and the dual face of media
No event in recent memory revealed the double-edged nature of media as clearly as the COVID-19 pandemic. On one hand, media saved lives by delivering safety guidelines, vaccine updates, and real-time alerts from health authorities. On the other hand, it fuelled a crisis so severe that the World Health Organization coined a new term for it: the infodemic.
On 15 February 2020, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned the Munich Security Conference that the world wasn’t just fighting an epidemic – it was fighting an overwhelming flood of accurate and misleading information that caused confusion, eroded trust, and encouraged risky behaviour.
The panic that spread faster than the virus
The pandemic showed how quickly misinformation could reshape public psyche. Fake cures circulated widely – from hot water with lemon juice to cow urine being promoted as a miracle remedy. A message falsely attributed to Dr Devi Shetty urging immunity hacks went viral before fact-checkers could debunk it. In one tragic case referenced in a Frontiers review, misinformation about cow urine as a cure caused serious public health confusion, while others were hospitalised after consuming toxic plant fruit based on a TikTok remedy.
A study published in the Medical Journal of Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth surveyed 920 respondents during the early lockdown and found that WhatsApp and Facebook were the primary channels for misinformation, leading to panic buying, misuse of N95 masks, and deep social anxiety. Shortages of masks in hospitals were caused, in part, by ordinary citizens hoarding them based on viral warnings.
The other side: media as a lifeline
Yet media also played a heroic role. Government portals, news channels, and verified social media accounts carried accurate dashboards, helpline numbers, and vaccination drives to millions. The same survey that flagged misinformation also reported that 72% of respondents felt the spread of information helped contain the virus. Fact-checking organisations like AltNews, BoomLive, and PIB FactCheck worked overtime to counter false narratives. Community health workers used mobile messaging to address vaccine hesitancy in villages where traditional outreach was impossible.
The pandemic, in this sense, was a live psychology experiment on the biggest stage possible. It proved that media’s power to inform and its power to distort are two sides of the same coin – and that the difference often comes down to who is speaking and how often the message is repeated.
What this means for the way we consume content
The takeaway from Bandura’s dolls, Hasher’s trivia lists, and the pandemic’s infodemic is not that media is inherently bad. It is that media’s influence is real, measurable, and often invisible to the person being influenced. Three habits can help build resilience.
Pause before you share
Sharing a claim is a form of repetition – and repetition creates belief, not just in others but in yourself. A 2023 study found that even a single prior exposure made people more likely to share misinformation. Slowing down before forwarding a message is one of the simplest cognitive defences available.
Diversify your information diet
Algorithms reward engagement, not accuracy. If your feed keeps showing you the same angle on a topic, the illusion of truth is quietly at work. Consciously reading across different outlets – including government sources like press releases from the Press Information Bureau – can disrupt the repetition loop.
Be mindful of what children watch
Bandura’s central insight was that children learn by watching. That insight applies equally to aggressive cartoons, influencer behaviour, and the tone of adult conversations they overhear. Curating the content young minds are exposed to is not censorship; it is basic psychological hygiene.
