A child born with a genetic potential for language, for example, will only develop fluent speech if surrounded by people who talk to them. Chronic stress, early-life trauma, nutrition, and even parenting style can leave biological marks that influence how a person develops. In this sense, nurture literally shapes nature.
Another important idea is gene-environment correlation, which suggests that individuals with certain genotypes are more likely to find themselves in certain environments. A child with a natural flair for music may be drawn to musical spaces, which in turn sharpens the skill further. A sociable child evokes friendly responses from others, reinforcing their sociability in a continuous feedback loop.

Formal and informal learning experiences expand cognitive abilities, shape interests, and influence attitudes. Two children with similar IQ scores may develop vastly different skill sets depending on the quality of teaching and mentorship they receive.
