The answer lies in an intricate web of influences that together sculpt our physical, mental, and social selves. Human development is never the product of a single cause. It unfolds through a constant interplay of biology, environment, and culture, and understanding these forces helps us see why each person’s journey is uniquely their own.

Heredity: The biological blueprint
Heredity is the starting point of every developmental story. It refers to the genetic material passed from biological parents to their children through 46 chromosomes, which contain an estimated 20,500 genes that act as instructions for building proteins and shaping cellular function. These genes lay the foundation for physical traits like height, skin colour, and eye colour, but their influence extends much deeper into aspects such as temperament, intellectual potential, and susceptibility to certain illnesses.
However, genes are not destiny. Most modern scholars agree that almost all human features are polygenic and multifactorial, meaning they emerge from the combined action of many genes and many environmental influences. One’s genetic make-up sets up a range of possibilities which may or may not be realised depending on one’s experiences. A child may inherit a predisposition for tallness or diabetes, but whether those possibilities become reality often depends on nutrition, lifestyle, and circumstances.
Intelligence and the nature-nurture interplay
Intelligence beautifully illustrates how heredity and environment collaborate. Research suggests that genetic factors account for roughly 50 to 80 percent of the variation in intelligence among individuals, though this figure shifts across the lifespan. Twin studies, comparing identical twins who share all their genes with fraternal twins who share about half, consistently show strong hereditary contributions to cognitive ability. Yet, experiences still matter enormously. Environment exerts its strongest influence on intelligence early in development, while genetic heritability becomes more pronounced as people move into adulthood.
Sex and biological differences in development
Sex influences development in both obvious and subtle ways. Boys and girls differ in growth rates, timing of puberty, and patterns of physical maturation. Girls typically enter puberty earlier than boys, reach their adult height sooner, and show different patterns of brain maturation during adolescence. These biological differences ripple into behaviour, social interactions, and even patterns of vulnerability to certain mental health conditions.
Beyond biology, gender roles assigned by society further shape development. A child’s opportunities, expected behaviours, access to education, and encouragement in different fields are often filtered through gender expectations. In many parts of the country, for instance, girls may still face restrictions in education, nutrition, and mobility that directly affect their physical growth and psychological wellbeing. Recognising the distinction between biological sex and socially constructed gender is essential to understanding developmental outcomes.
Socioeconomic status: The silent architect
Few factors shape human development as pervasively as socioeconomic status (SES). Income, parental education, occupation, and access to resources together determine the quality of food, healthcare, schooling, and safety a child experiences. The effects begin before birth and continue throughout life.
The evidence from India is particularly striking. Despite rapid economic growth, there exists a clear socio-economic gradient of childhood malnutrition, with children from poorer households disproportionately bearing the burden of stunting and undernutrition. A study examining children across 640 Indian districts found that poor nutritional status was more concentrated in less developed districts, and that a mother’s literacy and height made significant contributions to reducing inequality in nutrition outcomes.
Why poverty leaves lasting marks
Growing up in a low-income household affects development through multiple pathways. Poor children are more likely to face food insecurity, inadequate healthcare, exposure to environmental toxins, overcrowded housing, and chronic stress. Research on Santal children in Purulia district of West Bengal found that vulnerable nutritional and socioeconomic status were major causes of poor cognitive development, with children from higher-SES and better-nourished groups scoring significantly higher on reasoning tests.
Socioeconomic status also shapes language exposure, parental interaction styles, and educational stimulation at home. Household wealth and maternal education are strongly associated with dietary diversity among young children, and parents with higher education levels tend to have greater purchasing power and better nutrition knowledge, both of which translate into healthier development.
Hormones: The body’s chemical messengers
Hormones orchestrate development with remarkable precision. From the moment of conception, hormones guide the formation and regression of structures for somatic and reproductive development. Growth hormone, thyroid hormone, insulin-like growth factor, and sex hormones all work in coordinated axes to regulate everything from physical growth to mood, metabolism, and cognition.
Between birth and adolescence, pituitary hormones such as growth hormone, thyroid-stimulating hormone, and gonadotropins drive bodily maturation. Then comes puberty, a dramatic period when sex hormones surge and the body transforms. Puberty is not just a physical event. It is marked by three endocrine processes: adrenarche, gonadarche, and activation of the growth axis, bringing profound shifts in drives, motivations, and social life.
When hormonal development goes off course
Hormonal imbalances can significantly alter developmental trajectories. Hypothyroidism in childhood can stunt physical growth and impair cognitive development, while disorders of the sex hormones can cause early or delayed puberty. Because hormones affect brain development, mood regulation, and body image simultaneously, disruptions during adolescence can have lasting consequences on mental health and self-concept.
Nutrition: The fuel for growth
Nutrition is one of the most modifiable and powerful determinants of development. Adequate calories, proteins, vitamins, and minerals are essential for building body tissues, supporting brain development, and enabling normal hormonal function. Poor nutrition during critical windows, especially the first 1000 days from conception to age two, can cause irreversible harm to physical and cognitive growth.
The consequences of malnutrition extend well beyond weight and height. Early childhood malnutrition produces short-term effects such as a weaker immune system, higher risk of diarrheal disease and respiratory infections, and delays in motor, cognitive, and social development during childhood. In the long term, it is linked to chronic diseases like hypertension, diabetes, and heart conditions in adulthood.
Studies in rural India reinforce this link. Research on school children in Kolkata revealed significant correlations between undernutrition and cognitive development, with socioeconomic status and nutritional deficiencies interacting to substantially influence cognitive capabilities. Programmes like the Mid-Day Meal Scheme and Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) were designed precisely to break this cycle by ensuring children receive essential nutrients during critical developmental years.
Race and culture: Identity, environment, and opportunity
Race and ethnicity influence development less through biology and more through social experience. Differences in skin colour or genetic ancestry are themselves modest determinants of psychological traits, but the social meaning attached to race, through discrimination, stereotyping, and differential access to resources, can have profound developmental consequences. Children who grow up facing bias may experience chronic stress, lower self-esteem, and limited opportunities, all of which shape their mental and emotional trajectories.
Culture, meanwhile, shapes development in countless ways. It determines child-rearing practices, dietary habits, language acquisition, gender roles, religious values, emotional expression, and the very definition of what it means to grow up successfully. A child raised in a joint family setting learns collaboration and respect for elders differently from one raised in a nuclear household. Cultural festivals, rituals, and community gatherings become developmental experiences that shape identity and social skills.
How culture shapes intelligence and behaviour
Different cultures prioritise different forms of competence. Some emphasise academic achievement and verbal intelligence, while others value craftsmanship, social harmony, or spiritual development. These cultural priorities influence what children learn, how they think, and even what is considered intelligent behaviour. Culture also determines how emotions are expressed, how conflicts are resolved, and how mental health is perceived and addressed, all of which feed back into psychological development.
The interplay: Why no factor works alone
Perhaps the most important insight from decades of research is that these factors never operate in isolation. Heredity, sex, socioeconomic status, hormones, nutrition, race, and culture interact in dynamic, sometimes unpredictable ways. A child’s genetic potential for intelligence may be enhanced by good nutrition and stimulating schooling, or suppressed by chronic stress and malnutrition. A girl born with athletic potential may thrive in one cultural context and be held back in another.
Modern developmental science embraces what is called the epigenetic framework, which recognises that the environment can actually influence how genes are expressed, just as genetic predispositions can shape the environments people encounter. This means development is not a one-way transmission from genes to behaviour. It is a continuous conversation between biology and experience.
Understanding these factors has practical value. Parents cannot change a child’s genes, but they can provide nourishing food, emotional security, and enriching experiences. Educators can adapt to the diverse developmental backgrounds their students bring. Policymakers can design programmes that address nutrition, maternal health, early childhood stimulation, and educational access together rather than in isolation. Government initiatives like POSHAN Abhiyaan and the ICDS embody exactly this multi-dimensional approach to human development.
