How do psychologists actually measure something as complex and layered as human personality? Unlike height or weight, personality cannot be captured with a tape or a scale. Instead, researchers have developed a fascinating toolkit of methods, broadly falling into two camps: structured questionnaires where you describe yourself, and creative techniques where your interpretations of ambiguous images reveal what lies beneath the surface. Let’s explore how these methods work, where they shine, and where they fall short.

What is personality assessment?
Personality assessment is the systematic process of measuring an individual’s unique traits, behaviours, emotional patterns, and thought processes. Clinicians, researchers, educators, and even employers use these tools to understand how people differ from one another, predict behaviour in specific contexts, and sometimes diagnose psychological disorders.
The two dominant approaches could not be more different. Self-report measures ask you directly, through carefully designed questions, to describe yourself. Projective techniques, on the other hand, show you ambiguous stimuli and interpret what you see as a window into your unconscious mind. Each method rests on very different assumptions about where the “truth” of personality lives, and each has devoted supporters and fierce critics.
Self-report measures: the direct approach
Self-report inventories are structured questionnaires where respondents rate themselves on various traits, typically using true/false statements or a Likert-style agreement scale. The logic is straightforward: who knows you better than you? These tools are standardised, quick to administer, and can be scored objectively, which makes them workhorses in clinical, educational, and organisational settings.
The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI)
The MMPI is arguably the most researched psychological test in history. Originally developed by Starke R. Hathaway and J. C. McKinley at the University of Minnesota and first published in 1943, it was designed to help diagnose psychiatric conditions. Its updated version, the MMPI-2, released in 1989, contains 567 true/false items covering clinical scales such as depression, hypochondria, paranoia, and social introversion.
What makes the MMPI particularly interesting is its built-in validity scales, which are designed to detect non-responding, inconsistent responding, or deliberate over-reporting of symptoms. In other words, the test is clever enough to catch people who try to game it. This feature has made it a favourite in forensic evaluations, custody cases, and personnel selection. A newer version, the MMPI-3, was released in December 2020 with updated norms and new scales measuring disordered eating, compulsivity, and impulsivity.
The 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PF)
Developed by Raymond B. Cattell through decades of empirical research, the 16PF takes a different path. Rather than focusing on psychopathology, it maps normal-range personality across 16 primary factors, from warmth and emotional stability to self-reliance and openness to change. Cattell believed personality could be measured with the same systematic rigour that physical sciences use to identify elements.
The 16PF consists of 185 multiple-choice items and takes roughly 25 to 50 minutes to complete. Its scores are reported on the sten scale, a 10-point scale with a mean of 5.5 and a standard deviation of 2, where scores below 4 are considered low and scores above 7 are considered high. Interestingly, the 16PF’s global dimensions closely parallel the famous Big Five personality traits, providing a bridge between Cattell’s original framework and modern personality psychology.
Why self-report tests are so popular
Self-report inventories offer several practical advantages that explain their widespread use. They provide access to private experiences like internal thoughts, private fears, and subjective feelings that no observation could capture from the outside. They are cost-effective and efficient, making them ideal for large-scale screening. And they are standardised, meaning scores can be meaningfully compared across individuals and across time.
The hidden pitfalls: response biases
Yet, for all their strengths, self-report measures rest on a shaky assumption: that people can and will report about themselves accurately. Psychologists have documented several systematic distortions that can creep in and threaten the validity of the results.
Social desirability bias
This is the big one. Social desirability bias is the tendency to underreport socially undesirable attitudes and behaviours and to over-report more desirable attributes. Ask someone how often they lose their temper, cheat on their diet, or speak unkindly about others, and the answers tend to lean toward flattering fiction. Researchers have identified two components of this tendency: impression management, which is the deliberate effort to present oneself favourably to others, and self-deception, which is the unconscious drive to maintain a positive self-image.
The stakes rise sharply in high-pressure situations. In custody evaluations, employment screenings, or forensic assessments, individuals may intentionally distort their answers, and while validity scales help, a motivated test-taker familiar with the instrument can sometimes slip through.
Acquiescence bias
Also known as “yea-saying,” this is the tendency to respond to items with agreement or affirmation independent of their content. Some respondents simply say “yes” to everything, either because they want to seem agreeable, because they are not paying close attention, or because they genuinely find agreement easier than disagreement. The opposite pattern, called dissent bias or disacquiescence, involves saying “no” to everything.
Other distortions
Further biases include extreme responding, where people only pick the endpoints of a scale; midpoint responding, where respondents default to neutral answers; and a simple lack of self-awareness, where individuals genuinely do not have insight into their own psychological states. Together, these biases explain why self-report data, however convenient, cannot always be taken at face value.
Projective techniques: peering into the unconscious
If self-report tests ask the conscious mind to testify about itself, projective techniques try to bypass the gatekeeper entirely. Rooted in psychoanalytic traditions, these methods are based on the assumption that individuals project their unconscious motives, emotions, and conflicts onto ambiguous stimuli. Show someone a vague image, ask them what they see, and their answer will reveal more than they intended.
The Rorschach Inkblot Test
Perhaps no psychological test is more iconic than the inkblots. The Rorschach Inkblot Test was developed in 1921 by Swiss psychiatrist Hermann Rorschach and consists of 10 symmetrical inkblots – 5 are black and white, 2 are black/red/gray, and 3 are multicoloured. The respondent looks at each card and is asked the deceptively simple question: “What might this be?”
The analysis goes far beyond content. Trained examiners rate responses on over a hundred variables, noting whether the person looked at whole blots or just parts, whether the images perceived were unusual or common, and which aspects of the blot, such as form, colour, or movement, drove the response. The most widely used scoring approach, the Exner Comprehensive System, was developed to standardise this analysis, and a newer framework called the Rorschach Performance Assessment System (R-PAS) has further tightened administration and scoring procedures.
The Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)
Where the Rorschach uses abstract blots, the TAT uses structured pictures of people in ambiguous situations. Created in the 1930s by Henry Murray, an American psychologist, and psychoanalyst Christiana Morgan, the test shows the participant 8 to 12 ambiguous pictures and asks them to tell a story about each one. Who are these people? What led up to this moment? What will happen next?
The stories, rich with characters, motives, and outcomes, are thought to reveal the storyteller’s own hopes, fears, interests, and relationship patterns. The storytelling format is believed to lower a person’s defences more than direct questioning would, making it a valuable tool in psychotherapy, counselling, and research into motives like achievement and power.
Other projective tools
The projective family extends well beyond these two classics. The Rotter Incomplete Sentence Blank (RISB), developed by Julian Rotter in 1950, asks respondents to complete 40 partial sentences as quickly as possible, revealing preoccupations through what they fill in. The Children’s Apperception Test (CAT) adapts the TAT format for young children using animal figures, and culturally tailored tools like the TEMAS Multicultural Thematic Apperception Test have been developed to address the cultural bias of traditional projective tests.
The projective controversy: rich insight or subjective art?
Projective techniques generate unique, qualitative insights that structured questionnaires simply cannot capture. They tap into nuances of emotional life, interpersonal perception, and unconscious conflict. But they have also attracted heavy criticism.
The core problem is reliability. For the TAT, standardisation of test administration is virtually nonexistent among clinicians, and the test tends to be modest to low on validity and reliability. In practice, two examiners can look at the same protocol and reach different conclusions. The interpretation often depends heavily on the examiner’s theoretical orientation, training, and even personal biases.
Critics have also questioned the fundamental assumption that responses to ambiguous stimuli actually reveal unconscious material in a meaningful way. What if the patient is simply describing what the inkblot literally resembles, with no deeper meaning at all? And the problem of interpretation cuts deeper still: the meaning assigned to a response may say as much about the examiner’s worldview as about the patient’s psyche. This is a classic criticism of Freudian analysis, where interpretations often reveal more about the analyst’s assumptions than the analysand’s mind.
Comparing the two approaches
Self-report and projective methods are best thought of not as rivals but as complementary lenses. Self-report tests are nomothetic, meaning they place individuals within general, comparable categories using standardised scoring. They work best when you need efficient screening, numerical comparisons, or large-sample research. Projective tests are idiographic, zooming in on the unique inner world of one person, which is valuable when depth matters more than comparability.
In contemporary clinical practice, many psychologists use a multimethod approach, combining self-report inventories like the MMPI or 16PF with interviews, behavioural observation, and perhaps a projective test. No single instrument can capture the full complexity of a human being, so the triangulation of methods offers a richer, more balanced portrait than any one tool alone.
The future of personality assessment
The field is evolving rapidly. Digital administration, computer-adaptive testing, implicit association tests, behavioural data from smartphones, and even machine learning applied to language samples are all reshaping how personality is measured. Yet the old tensions endure: the trade-off between standardisation and depth, between conscious self-report and unconscious revelation, and between efficiency and individuality.
