Grasping the true concept of stress is essential not just for academic purposes but for making sense of how our bodies and minds respond to the constant demands of life.

Where the word “stress” comes from
The term stress has a surprisingly old lineage. It originates from the Latin word stringere, which means “to draw tight”. This Latin root later travelled through Old French as estrece (meaning narrowness or oppression) and Middle English as destresse, eventually settling into the English word we use today.
What is interesting is that “stress” did not always carry the emotional weight it does now. The term was used in mechanics by 1855 to describe the force acting on or within a body that tends to deform it. Engineers and physicists used it to explain what happens when a metal beam bends under pressure or when a rope pulls taut. The idea of “pressure on a material object” had nothing to do with humans feeling anxious or overwhelmed.
From physics to human experience
The leap from physical sciences to human experience was gradual. The word “stress” had none of its modern emotional connotations before the 1920s. It was borrowed from engineering to describe how external forces act on objects, and only later did researchers begin applying the same logic to living beings. Just as a metal rod experiences strain under load, human beings appeared to experience something similar when faced with demanding situations. This analogy between inanimate objects and living organisms eventually gave birth to the scientific study of stress as we know it.
Hans Selye and the birth of modern stress theory
No conversation about the concept of stress would be complete without mentioning Hungarian-born endocrinologist Hans Selye, widely regarded as the father of stress research. While working as a young researcher at McGill University in the 1930s, Selye stumbled upon something unexpected. He was the first scientist to identify stress as the mechanism underpinning the nonspecific signs and symptoms of illness.
Selye defined stress as the nonspecific response of the body to any demand placed upon it. What does “nonspecific” mean in this context? It refers to the idea that regardless of whether a stimulus is pleasant or unpleasant, hot or cold, physical or psychological, the body produces a similar pattern of reactions. A painful blow and a passionate kiss, Selye famously observed, can be equally stressful.
The General Adaptation Syndrome
Through his experiments on rats exposed to various harmful stimuli, Selye discovered a consistent pattern he named the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS). First proposed in his 1936 letter to the journal Nature, the GAS consists of three phases: the alarm phase, the phase of adaptation, and the phase of exhaustion.
The alarm reaction is the body’s immediate response to a threat, similar to the fight-or-flight response. The stage of resistance follows, during which the body attempts to adapt and cope with the ongoing stressor. Finally, if the stressor persists for too long, the body enters the stage of exhaustion, where adaptive resources are depleted and illness can set in.
Selye also observed a characteristic “stress triad” in his experiments: enlargement of the adrenal glands, shrinkage of the thymus and lymph nodes, and ulceration of the stomach lining. These findings helped establish stress as a real, measurable biological phenomenon rather than just a vague feeling of being overwhelmed.
Lazarus and Folkman: stress as a relationship
While Selye focused primarily on the body’s physiological reactions, psychologists Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman brought a different lens to the concept. In their influential 1984 book Stress, Appraisal and Coping, they proposed what is known as the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, which examines how individuals perceive and respond to stressors in their environment.
Their central argument was revolutionary: stress does not simply exist “out there” in events. Rather, it emerges from the relationship between a person and their environment. According to Lazarus and Folkman, we experience stress when we perceive that the demands of a situation exceed our capacity to deal with it.
The role of cognitive appraisal
A core contribution of this theory is the concept of cognitive appraisal. When confronted with a potentially stressful event, a person goes through two key mental evaluations. In primary appraisal, the individual judges whether an event poses a threat, harm, or challenge. In secondary appraisal, the person assesses the resources they have, whether internal (like confidence, skill, or experience) or external (like money or social support), to deal with it.
This explains why two people can face the same situation, say an important exam or a job interview, and experience completely different levels of stress. One may feel confident and energised, the other anxious and overwhelmed. The model emphasises the person-environment transaction and suggests that a stress response is highly influenced by individual appraisal processes.
What exactly is a stressor?
While stress is the response, a stressor is the trigger. Stressors are events, conditions, or stimuli that prompt the stress response. They can be external or internal, physical or psychological, short-lived or chronic.
Common categories of stressors
Stressors come in many forms. Physical stressors include things like extreme temperatures, injury, illness, or intense physical exertion. Psychological stressors involve worry, fear, grief, or conflict. Social stressors might include family disputes, workplace tensions, or relationship breakdowns. Environmental stressors range from noise pollution and overcrowding to traffic jams, something anyone navigating a metro city can instantly relate to.
Importantly, stressors need not always be external. Internal thoughts, habitual worries, perfectionism, and self-criticism can all act as powerful stressors from within. This is why two people in identical circumstances can experience vastly different levels of stress.
Not all stress is bad: eustress versus distress
A common misconception is that all stress is harmful. In reality, Selye himself distinguished between two forms of stress: eustress (positive stress) and distress (negative stress). Selye introduced these terms to separate good stress from bad stress.
Eustress is the kind of stress that motivates and energises. Think of the excitement before a competition, the thrill of starting a new job, or the focused intensity while preparing for a wedding. It is challenging but feels manageable, and it often leads to growth, learning, and a sense of accomplishment.
Distress, on the other hand, is the kind of stress that feels overwhelming. It drains energy, impairs performance, and, if sustained over time, can lead to serious physical and mental health consequences. Losing a job, a prolonged illness, financial difficulties, or the death of a loved one typically fall into this category.
Whether a stressor produces eustress or distress often depends on whether the person feels they have the right resources to manage the challenge. This again echoes the Lazarus and Folkman idea that perception and appraisal matter enormously.
Why the concept of stress matters today
Understanding the concept of stress is not just an academic exercise. It has practical implications for daily life, workplaces, and public institutions. Whether you are a student preparing for competitive exams, a civil servant handling administrative pressures, or simply someone trying to balance work and family, recognising what stress is and how it operates helps in managing it effectively.
Modern research continues to refine our understanding. While some of Selye’s original assumptions, particularly the strict doctrine of nonspecificity, have been revised in light of new findings in neuroscience and endocrinology, his fundamental insight remains powerful: stress is the body and mind’s way of responding to demand. Combined with the cognitive approach of Lazarus and Folkman, we now have a more layered understanding that accounts for both biology and psychology.
Stress in everyday administrative life
In public administration and governance settings, stress takes on unique dimensions. Tight deadlines, public scrutiny, high-stakes decisions, and long working hours are built into the profession. Recognising the difference between productive pressure that drives performance and chronic overload that damages well-being is crucial. Healthy organisations increasingly acknowledge that managing stress is not a personal weakness but an institutional responsibility.

The concept of stress has evolved remarkably over the past century. From a Latin verb meaning “to draw tight,” to an engineering term describing force on materials, to Hans Selye’s groundbreaking biological definition, and finally to the cognitive-relational model of Lazarus and Folkman, each milestone has added depth to our understanding.
Stress is neither a villain to be defeated nor a simple sensation to be ignored. It is a complex, adaptive response that reflects our engagement with the world around us. Some stress helps us perform, grow, and adapt. Too much, for too long, can overwhelm our systems. The key lies not in eliminating stress but in understanding it, recognising its sources, and responding to it wisely.
